I stopped at Rae's for the first time out of curiosity only and was amazed at what I'd been missing. We're fortunate in Lansing to have an extremely large yarn shop, Threadbear, which (since it's the storefront for a mail-order business) has the biggest selection I've ever seen. But although Rae's is smaller, it can MORE than hold its own, with an incredible variety of gorgeous Noro yarns and many luxurious wool-silk blends, among other things. The inventory seems very well chosen. They also have lots of delicious pattern books and interesting notions (my next purchase will be the little caps to hold sock needles together when I'm not knitting). As of Jan 2008, Rae's has moved to a terrific new location on Michigan Avenue, across the street from Everybody Reads bookstore and Gone Wired cafe, so you can spend a whole morning drinking coffee, browsing books and picking out yarn. People staying in downtown Lansing, you can get to Rae's easily on CATA route #1 which runs east-west on Michigan Ave.

I love this shop! It has a cozy atmosphere with chairs and couches a-plenty. The inviting atmosphere and HUGE selection of yarns makes the store a stand out. If you have any questions the proprietor (who is there far more often than not) is friendly and knowledgeable about her products and many techniques. Keep an eye out for her patterns in store, they are great projects and quite well thought out. I was very pleased with the addition of spinning supplies, of which Rae carries a variety, which is unusual for the area. I am in love with the Kromski spinning wheels, they are GORGEOUS. While she may be a bit smaller than other stores, she makes up for that by carefully selecting yarns that are diverse and a delight to the senses. The store is also located near a great Italian restaurant and a small, independent art gallery/coffee shop.
